Who makes the best soda bread in Libby and NW Montana? It's something thats been debated for years (or maybe not). On Saturday March 8th, 2008, the Libby Irish Fair will hold the Second Annual Irish Soda Bread Baking Contest to answer that burning question of who bakes the best loaf of Irish Soda Bread. Anyone can enter and compete for the title of Irish Soda Bread Baking Champion. The prizes are small, but the glory, prestige and honor will more than make up for the lack of value.
Irish Soda Bread traditionally consists of ingredients found in the Irish kitchen in the 1800's. Flour, baking soda, salt and soured milk (or buttermilk). Since then recipes have added other ingredients, becoming non-traditional, though w/ the traditional roots. There will be 2 categories of judging: traditional and non-traditional. The traditional category will consist of the 4 main ingredients: Flour, baking soda, salt and soured milk (or buttermilk). The non-traditional category will include additional ingredients. It's all done for fun, so bring bring your bread and enjoy the Irish Fair.
